Inveraray | Home To The Duke Of Argyll

Inveraray, is one of the most popular destinations for day trips, with private cars and coaches destined for Inveraray week in and week out. Inveraray was promoted to a Royal Burgh by Charles the First in 1648 and has been linked, as is Tarbert, with herring fishing and it was said to employ several thousand staff during the late 1700's.

Today Inveraray is renowned for its well maintained white buildings with black woodwork, and for its superb unique Castle which is home to the current Duke of Argyll and his family. Inveraray Castle grounds are also home to the Connect Festival, a Glastonbury type open air music festival event attracting people countrywide.

Inveraray also has a 9 hole golf course just outside the village to the south and some wonderful scenery all around that area. For those who will be visiting for the first time there is something special about Inveraray.

Other things to see and do here are a visit to Inveraray Jail, you will be relieved to know it is not used for modern day criminals, although sometimes sponsored lock-ins are done in aid of charity! There is also a floating museum.

There are plenty of places to stay, eat and drink here in Inveraray.

Only a short drive from Inveraray is Loch Awe which is also some of the most wonderful landscapes in Scotland, with the ruin of Kilchurn Castle at the very top of the Loch.
