Portavadie | Linking Cowal & Kintyre

Portavadie on the east side of Loch Fyne is important for two reasons, the first is that the car and passenger ferry links Cowal to Tarbert, which enables exploration of different parts of Argyll separated by a 25 minute ferry journey.

Secondly a marina complex welcomes yachters and boat enthusiasts to Loch Fyne.

Portavadie, west of Tighnabruaich and directly east of Tarbert (by Calmac ferry approximately 20 minutes), is the ferry terminal and marina that connects the peninsula of Kintyre to the Cowal peninsula

Historically Portavadie is connected with the development of a concrete oil production platform which never really came into fruition from the stopping of the project in 1978. The works left a huge quarry that was used as a fish farm up until 1988 when Polphail was sold.

As mentioned, nowadays Portavadie is primarily used as a ferry terminal connecting Cowal to Kintyre by car ferry which has been an all year round service since 1997, although fast developing is a additional (perhaps rival) marina which is set to offer competitive sheltered berthing rates, excellent facilities including restaurant and wireless broadband internet access.

Portavadie is also close to the sailing village of Tighnabruaich, where a few shops and the renowned An Lochan hotel and restaurant are located. For quality self catering accommodation Ardmarnoch is recommended with tranquility, privacy and comfort close to all local amenities including access to the east shore of Loch Fyne on a private section of coastline.

Golfers will be delighted to try the Kames Golf Course which is a test to most golfers.
